From time to time I like to feature special programs that I've found to be particularly effective in fitness training. In the past this section has discussed rock climbing, snowboarding, mountaineering and now I'd like to bring up fishing kayaks and kayaking in general. My husband John, whom many of you know, is a professional fisherman as obsessed with his craft as I am with mine. In my quest to find a bridge between our two worlds, I recently suggested that we buy a set of fishing kayaks. He can fish and attempt to teach me some basics, and I can get him moving around and putting in some physical work!

Things started getting serious between me and John when we realized how much we each loved being outdoors. He had always been a fisherman which is an easy connection to the outdoors. I had always been in the fitness world, but also found myself pushing myself and clients into outdoor arenas. This might be trail runs, outside gyms or just cooling down with some outdoors stretching routines. Lately we've both been really busy building our own businesses and have found we spend much of our free time doing clerical, computery, very indoor things in our spare time. Anyone that has their own business knows this routine, and how ever-present it is. We both kind of had a wake-up call when we realized that we hadn't been hiking together in 6 months! We sat down and made some plans, executed, but they still felt forced. It was like we were telling ourselves we wanted to be there, but really our minds were on work. It was this realization that led me to the notion that something related to both our businesses but also fun would be the ticket. After doing some quick research online, I realized that fishing kayaks were just the way to make it happen!
A Common Love
Fishing kayaks were a complete mystery to me. I didn't know which brands to look for, what features would be needed, and I didn't even know how I planned to store them! Immediately however, I put together the potential as an exercise platform. Twisting, digging, turning, rowing and flipping all registered as an incredible abdominal workout. This was enough to inspire me personally, though John's passion for fishing was what led me beyond just simple kayaks into the realm of kayak fishing. I ordered two fishing kayaks that I felt would be respected by John, and begin laying the groundwork on getting him excited. I asked things like "Oh, I saw some guys on the lake today that had fishing kayaks, it looked like fun." His overall responses to these types of questions seemed positive, so I allowed my hopes to build. He loves fishing, I love exercise, and fishing kayaks take both. I can proudly say (in defense of my pre-planning) that we have just gotten back from our 4th excursion as kayak fishermen together and it's been wonderful!
